The steel bridge over the Jándula River near Andujar in Jaen is a piece of structural art, built in 1915 and still preserving its original arrangement and materials. Design live load back in 1915 accounted for carriages up to 1.5 m wide and weights of 9 tons per axis. Live load configuration, weight and speed have changed significantly since then.
The Andalucia Regional Government Road Authority in Jaén commissioned FHECOR with the basic project for the widening and strengthening of the bridge. Critical condition of the steel profiles supporting the deck was detected in the first inspection thanks to local removal of pavement and macadam forming the original platform material.
Traffic was restricted to vehicles weighing less than 1.5 tons per axis.
The risk of collapse of the profiles and the undesired load limit lead to the decision of carrying out emergency works to restore normal service condition. Estimated budget is roughly €1.2 million. Rehabilitation works have been commissioned to AZUL.
Emergency works will comprise traffic diversion to a temporary crossing, dismantlement and replacement of the current deck with a concrete slab, and steel structure strengthening anticipating prospective widening while preserving the original bridge configuration.
